QUESTION: what are the new rules for carbon monoxide alarms?

ANSWER:

• CO alarms will now be required where there is any fitted combustion appliance

• includes all gas and oil fired boilers, even if they did not previously need to have a CO alarm

• this relates to all rental properties, other than those that have entirely electric heating

• CO alarms can be battery operated and do not need to be hard wired

• NEW REQUIREMENT a landlord must repair or replace a non-working smoke or CO alarm ‘as soon as reasonably practicable’ once reported as not working

“due to come into effect in October 2022”
